Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC)
Is a naturally occurring mineral widely used as an inexpensive dietary calcium supplement or as an additive in food premixes. It is also used in pharmaceutical formulations and tabletting.
Techfil are the appointed distributors for the UK and Ireland of the Calcitec range from Mineraria Sacilese SpA Italy. The Calcitec range is BP/EP/USP and Food Chemical Codex approved.
Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC)
Is produced through a recarbonisation process or as a by-product of certain bulk chemical processes.
PCC is used for similar applications to GCC but the particle size is much finer and more closely controlled, allowing PCC to be used more for paper coating and surface finishing.
However with the ever improving production techniques of fine grade GCC there are opportunities to replace PCC with extra fine grades. Our Calcitec M/1 is one such grade which is a proven alternative to PCC in food and pharmaceutical applications.
Calcium Carbonate is used as calcium source in liquid products where the very small particle size is valuable. Many medicines and cosmetics contain GCC, as the base material of pills, or for bulking of liquid medicines, ointments or creams. GCC’s are also used in toothpaste as a mild abrasive. PCC is commonly used in paint and inks as extenders to increase opacity and porosity for dry hiding.
